Complimentary Medicine

Complimentary Medicine is a treatment or therapy that is used in addition to conventional medicine. Acupuncture, herbs and supplements, massage therapy and yoga are all good examples of complimentary medicine The basic philosophy and principles of complimentary medicine, is a focus on treating the whole person, and recognizing that physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well being are all interconnected and play an important part in your overall health.

Our Complementary Medicine Program helps you access safe and effective therapies that include Acupuncture, Massage Therapy, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Oncology Aesthetics, and Yoga.

All of these services are offered at our Baptist and Saint Thomas hospitals and are recommended for use in combination with traditional cancer care. We will be adding these services at our new Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro scheduled to open in the fall of 2010 You should always consult with your doctor about any therapies you are considering.

All of our Complementary Services are open to our patients, family members, hospital employees and health care professionals. We also welcome and invite the general public.

Acupuncture is a painless and safe method of treatment that can help reduce pain, chronic headaches, nausea, menopausal symptoms and assist with the bodies' natural healing abilities to promote physical and emotional well being.

Massage therapy can help reduce pain, fatigue, depression, muscular tension, stress and anxiety. Types of massage available include swedish relaxation, cranial sacral, deep tissue, sports and myofascial.

Manual lymphatic Drainage is a form of massage therapy that uses gentle rhythmic pumping techniques on the skin and stimulates lymphatic vessels and lymph node clusters to transport substances that the body needs to properly function and protect itself against illnesses.

It can also aid in reducing swelling associated with injuries or post surgical procedures and is useful for reducing pain, increasing immunity and increasing ones overall feeling if well being.

Many cancer patients and survivors who have had lymph nodes removed after their diagnosis find that manual lymphatic drainage can greatly improve chronic edema (lymphedema) and contribute to improved health and recovery.

Our practitioner is Vodder and Foeldi certified in a 200 hour course, and has 13 years experience as a lymphatic specialist working with cancer patients and the general public.
