Definition: This monetary scholarship of $10,000 will be awarded to an
incoming PGY-1 resident for recognition of a commitment to humanism in
medicine, encompassing altruism, respect, empathy, integrity, compassion
and service.
Purpose: The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage students in the their pursuit of humanism, particularly as it relates to the mission of our health ministry, and to their future in the practice of medicine. As the numbers of students entering internal medicine continues to decline, the scholarship will assist in attracting students with a commitment to humanism to our program. The recipient will hopefully develop a lifelong commitment to this pursuit and mentor others to this career path. Selection Criteria: All students who have matched to our categorical internal medicine position will be eligible. Nominations will be made by the full-time faculty, after assessment of the student's accomplishments during the undergraduate and medical school and their future interest in the area of humanism in medicine. Award: This will be a $10,000 award to the incoming resident at the time of entry in the residency program (July 1st) Expectations of the recipient: It will be anticipated that the resident will continue his/her efforts to further the contributions of humanism in medicine. This could be done in a variety of ways, including service to those patients in psychosocial need, conferences to enlighten other residents and ancillary personnel in these areas or an appointment to committees that further this pursuit (such as the Ethics Committee or other potential venues). It will be expected that this resident will attend the quarterly "Meaning of Medicine" retreats and some of the monthly evening meetings when possible. The Faculty will oversee and help to mentor the resident in these achievements.
Residents are allowed 4 weeks paid vacation per year, which are taken in 1-week increments during subspecialty blocks.
