Third Year Core Clerkship in Medicine - Nashville

This clerkship provides an excellent opportunity for third year students to learn Internal Medicine on the wards of a large tertiary care private hospital with state of the art facilities and equipment. Students will spend one month in Nashville and one month in Memphis. The clinical experience is enriched by the high faculty-to-student ratio, an interactive lecture format, and a balanced clinical exposure to all areas of Internal Medicine. Students take call every fourth night and there is one third year student per team, thus ensuring individual learning opportunity.
Senior Clerkship in Medicine

This general internal medicine clerkship provides the student with a broad array of clinical problems in a large hospital setting. The student assumes responsibility for patient care under the supervision of a resident and an attending physician. The clerkship emphasizes bedside skills, differential diagnosis, cost effectiveness, ethics, and treatment. Students take call every fourth night and function integrally within the clinical team.
Ambulatory Care

This elective will expose the student to aspects of ambulatory care that are essential to a general medicine practice. Fundamentals of health maintenance and prevention will be emphasized. Students will see patients in community private practice settings, and subspecialty offices. Exposure to outpatient support services, including hospice, home health care, and alcohol/drug rehabilitation will be provided. Students will attend subspecialty conferences, and time is provided for individual didactic sessions with faculty. A core curriculum syllabus is provided. There is no weekend or night call.
Preceptorship in Endocrinology

This preceptorship affords students the opportunity to evaluate and manage outpatients and inpatients with endocrine and metabolic problems and enables them to become effective consultants. Recognition and treatment of emergency endocrine and metabolic problems will be emphasized. Students will see up to 25 endocrinology patients per week. They will evaluate new inpatient and outpatient endocrine referrals; evaluation and management of these patients will then be discussed. Lectures include daily endocrine conferences, twice weekly morning report, and daily subspecialty conferences. There is no weekend or night call.
Infectious Diseases - Nashville

This elective at Baptist Hospital in Nashville offers a wide range of clinical infectious disease problems in a large tertiary care setting. The student will make daily inpatient and outpatient rounds with full-time faculty members in infectious diseases. The rotation provides one-on-one teaching with a comprehensive review of infectious disease medicine through patient evaluations, regular lectures, and an up-to-date syllabus comprising landmark articles. There is no weekend or night call.
