Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

Nurse Navigator Program

In the course of a lifetime, one in every eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

A diagnosis of breast cancer, regardless of your stage or age, can be a frightening, life-altering experience. It’s easy to get lost and overwhelmed amid the vast sea of questions, concerns, tests, and treatment options. At the Baptist Hospital Center for Breast Health, we understand that much of the fear associated with a breast cancer diagnosis is due to the uncertainty and feeling that you’ve lost control of your life.

Fear is a normal reaction to a breast cancer diagnosis. When turned in a positive direction, fear can motivate us toward better education and communication. It can move us in a forward direction to find the community and support teams that are best equipped to help us through the times ahead.

Our team of nurse navigators, located within our Center for Breast Health, is specially trained to help you manage your fears — after diagnosis and throughout your treatment — providing education, helping you gather information for more informed decisions, facilitating communication with your medical team, helping you understand the tests and procedures you’ll be facing and connecting you with the many resources available.

Our nurse navigator program provides licensed nurses, skilled in the knowledge, process and treatment of breast cancer, to help you navigate your way along the path toward recovery and a better quality of life.

Nurse Navigators serve as educators, advocates, guides and liaisons between you, your medical team, your family and our extensive network of support resources to facilitate your treatment, recovery and rehabilitation. We will work with you to coordinate your appointments and tests with your medical team. Throughout the process we will be available to work with you one-on-one for your peace of mind.

Support of Survivors (SOS) Program

A diagnosis of breast cancer can be paralyzing. When first diagnosed, many women will feel lost and alone. Overwhelmed, they are usually unaware of their options; uncertain even of the questions they should be asking.

Answers, hope and compassion from those who have lived through it and survived.
At the Baptist Hospital Center for Breast Health, we understand what a breast cancer diagnosis means and have implemented comprehensive programs designed to treat the patient – not the cancer. To help address the fears and concerns of women recently diagnosed with breast cancer or those facing a recurrence or receiving treatment, we have developed the Support of Survivors (SOS) program in partnership with the American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery program.

Through this unique partnership, and working in conjunction with our Nurse Navigator program, we match newly diagnosed breast cancer patients with specially trained breast cancer survivor volunteers. These volunteers are available for face-to-face visits or by phone, to provide compassionate support from one who has been through it and survived. Our specially trained Reach to Recovery volunteers are available through the diagnosis and treatment to ensure that each patient’s concerns are addressed; that they are better informed and more empowered in their own care.

As breast cancer survivors themselves, the volunteers offer hope and encouragement as one who has faced breast cancer and survived to lead productive lives.
